What is individual choice in design?

The pandemic has made us think harder about freedom of movement – how can people isolate but still flourish in later living environments? In this week’s Ageing Unlocked, we delve into the design principle of the moment, individual choice.

Having an individual choice is essential for a resident as it provides them with freedom. With the right design, we can create environments where people feel safe but enable active, fluid movement within a space. Watch to discover more with Stewart Dean.

What is individual choice in design?

Having an individual choice is essential for a resident and provides them with freedom. Without the choice to move around the development really restricts their whole living and being. This becomes very difficult when you have a large development when you have 200-300 units.

How do you provide someone with an individual choice? Residents have that within their own apartments but when they come outside their apartments you need to be able to create spaces that are safe and secure and give them the ability to live in those areas. and utilise them.

The way we do this at Marchese Partners is to design small flexible spaces within the communal areas where people can go and make it feel that it is part of their home.
