Through the Window Epsom | Sue’s story.

Through the Window Epsom – Sue’s Story.

In this episode of Through the Window Epsom, we talk to Sue who helps older people access information and advice about how her role at Age Concern Epsom has changed due to COVID-19.

Sue has been working for Age Concern Epsom and Ewell for 8 years having moved from another local charity helping stroke survivors. As an Information and Advice Officer, Sue is the first point of contact for older people in Epsom.

“No two days are the same.  It’s very rewarding to feel that you have contributed to changing someone’s life in a positive way.”

Since the lockdown, Age Concern’s ‘drop-in’ service has been suspended. Sue now deals with incoming telephone calls to help older people in Epsom access the information and advice they need.

“A lot of the time people just don’t know where to turn to to get the help that they need.”

Since the pandemic started Sue explains that things dramatically changed. Sue and the team were immediately inundated with calls where 80% of requests were requiring help with shopping or collecting prescriptions. For many older people in Epsom, Age concern has been a lifeline.

“The most rewarding part is sorting out somebody’s difficulties.”

Sue also spoke of Age Concern Epsom’s role in continuing the celebrations for VE Day with cream teas, goody bags, and even linking clients together to reminisce on the telephone. Two 100-year-old clients who were paired up by the team are now in regular contact.

Watch to hear more from Sue and her experiences of helping older people during the lockdown.
